The safari industry is very lucky, there are always people that want to travel to Africa – this means many new luxury safari camps turn up all over the place, in some areas such as the Mara Reserve (not including the private conservancies that surround the reserve, which are still un-crowded) this has not been favourable – over crowding has become a serious issue. However there are still pristine and magical parts of Africa, with abundant wildlife and no people, that are just begging to be explored. There have recently been, or will be, some very exciting and enticing new safari camps opening all over Africa and herre are the top ten:
1. Liuwa Plains
Liuwa Plains is one of the lesser known spots for game viewing in Zambia but shouldn’t be overlooked – it is quite spectacular and the vast open plains host the second largest Wildebeest Migration in the world (second to the Serengeti). The area was recently made famous by that incredible wild dog sequence shown on Attenborough’s Life Story. Norman Carr are one of Zambia’s top safari operators and next year they will be running four and five night explorations of this stunning area.
2. Tswalu Tarkuni
Tswalu Kalahari is famous for being one of the most wild spots in South Africa, only reachable by light aircraft – it is literally too far to drive. Here you have the vast open spaces of the Kalahari complete with meerkats and black maned Kalahari lions – Tarkuni was the owners’ house – it is now five extremely luxurious suites each with their own star bed for those nights you’d prefer to sleep under the Milky Way.
3. Kadizora Camp
Kadizora Camp is the newest camp to hit the Delta and is located in the remote and wild Vumbura Concession which has exceptional game – the camp is ridiculously good value considering the comfort and quality of experience it is offering, as well as its remote and wild location.
4. Mwiba River Lodge
The Southern Serengeti is one of the most heart-breakingly beautiful areas of Africa anyway but now you have 51,000 acres of private wildlife reserve to explore, with just an eight suite luxury lodge sharing it with you. This is true bliss and the emphasis here is on freedom to explore, as and when you want.
5. Vamizi Villas
Although not strictly a luxury safari camp Vamizi is in Mozambique which is certainly very much Africa. In conjunction with their own suites which are wonderfully spoiling there is now a private villa option for families and groups of friends – they come with butlers, staff and drivers and you won’t have to see another soul. The style and décor is glamorous and elegant and you will be utterly spoilt throughout.
6. Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp
The whole safari industry cried ‘finally’ when this luxury safari camp was launched. At last there is now a small intimate and luxurious safari camp which has Ngorongoro Crater views, and that all important access to the Crater in the early mornings and late evenings when the crowds have gone but the wildlife is at its most active.
7. Kuro Tarangire
Kuro is a luxury eco safari camp located in Northern Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park which comes alive with elephants between July and October, and the birdlife year round is phenomenal. This camp is quirky and magical, and you’ll never want to leave, so much part of the family the staff make you feel.
8. Melako Camp
Melako Camp in Kenya will be run by the world famous Roberts Safaris – this family have guided safaris for generations and this is why they have arranged this exclusive use luxury mobile camp to go into one of the most remote and beautiful parts of Northern Kenya – you can guarantee not to see another soul and will be blown away by the ruggedness of the terrain and the game species you’ll see.
9. Angama Mara
Angama Mara comes to us from the founders of Beyond (although now unrelated) and it certainly has the same style and elegance they are famous for. Angama sits high on an escarpment with the most mesmerising views of the Mara, with glass fronted suites which make the most of the view from every single angle.
10. Saruni Ocean
Last but not least Saruni Ocean now completes the Saruni trio of luxury Samburu and Mara properties, and now luxury beach property – Kenya has never looked so appealing and Saruni Ocean’s remote and secluded location is to die for, as is the décor, food and spa.
